The Kahuku Bon Dance

The Kahuku Bon Dance festival, long a traditional annual event in the small North Shore community, is feeling the pain of an aging and diminishing congregation, much like the village that surrounds it. From its heyday of more than 200 members when the present temple was built in 1949, the membership dwindled to 90 when the town's sugar mill closed in 1970 and is now down to 30, mostly in their early 80s. The elderly members, however, are calling on their ancestral immigrant work ethic to face the uphill battle to continue the only such festival between Waialua and Kaneohe, aided by three Kahuku High School alumni classes, who themselves are in their late 60s and early 70s. Without the help of the alumni, the annual Bon Dance may not have survived, according to Ted Kunimitsu, "Our membership has been dwindling ever since the Kahuku Plantation Co. closed the sugar mill. We would have encountered great difficulty sustaining the annual tradition due to our small numbers and frail health," Mr. Kunimitsu continues, "but with the infusion of energy and manpower, the annual event has experienced a huge increase in attendance recently," even attracting candidates for rural Oahu political office some years ago.

In an effort to continue attracting observers and participants, Mr. Kunimitsu has engaged outside entertainment in the form of the Young Okinawans of Hawaii with their popular Lion Dance and "hip" music to appeal to a younger audience. The KHS Class of '56 spearheaded the idea of helping the temple elders a few years ago by lending muscle to erect the central tower around which the dancers circle. Later, the all wood framework was replaced by one made of metal pipes for easier assembling, according to the designer of the new tower, Douglas Nakaahiki, of Hauula, who served as Vice President of his Senior Class more than a half century ago. Coordinating the alumni project is Renin Werner, of Aiea, who says the the assistance they offer is "our way of giving back to the community of for the guidance the elders of Kahuku provided when we were growing up." He attributes his experience as President of the 1956 Future Farmers of America in rallying the graduates from the three KHS classes. The Classes of '57 and '58 took charge of the food booth for the appreciative ladies of the Temple. Mrs. Ted Kunimitsu, head of the ladies group, says that before the KHS alumni stepped in, htere were only hot dogs and saimin available. The menu now includes an expanded menu of local favorites such as plate lunches, hot dogs, saimin, spam musubi, corn-on-the-cob, teriyaki sticks, fried noodles and a large variety of desserts. Mrs. Kunimitsu, the former Nancy Tamura, taught Home Making and Science to many of the alumni volunteers at Kahuku School in the 1950's.

Proceeds from the food concession go partly to the Hongwanji and partly to the two classes to finance reunion activities. Co-chairs of the food concession are Patsy (Makiau) Au, of Kahuku, Class of '57, and Jane (Kochi) Takara, of Kailua, Class of '58. Patsy encourages everyone in the area to "come early and have their dinner there before the dance."
